ABSA Premier League

Another exciting ABSA Premiership season is on the cards for the football loving and eccentric South African fans. Last season saw Kaizer Chiefs claim their first title after eight years with Englishman Stuart Baxter leading Amakhosi to the Promised Land after years of watching their bitter rivals Orlando Pirates dominate proceedings.

Kaizer Chiefs will start the 2013/2014 season as favourites after management kept the core of the players that won the championship.

The 2011/2012 season top scorer Knowledge Musona also returns to Naturena on a one year loan deal after an unhappy spell in Germany and is expected to lead Amakhosi’s title defence.Orlando Pirates have been very quiet in the transfer window but the acquisition of the talented Kermit Erasmus has given a glimmer of hope to the Buccaneers who’s title challenge could be distracted by their exploits in the CAF Champions League.

Last season’s runners-up Platinum Stars have undergone a surprise shake up and could struggle to repeat the heroics of the previous campaign after losing a number of their top players and their coach.Cavin Johnosn has taken over at SuperSport United and is joined at Matsatsantsa by the clubs standout players last season in Bafana Bafana winger Thuso Phala and Ennocent Mkhabela.

Johnson has promised his United team will be title contenders after also snapping up David Mathebula and Bennet Chenene from Moroka Swallows while towering striker Mame Niang makes a welcome return after banging in crucial goals while on loan at the University of Pretoria last season. Three time league winning coach Gavin Hunt has left Pretoria for Johannesburg where he takes over at Wits.

The Students finished an impressive fourth last season after assembling a star studded team which was guided by 1996 Afcon winning coach Clive Barker. With Hunt now at the helm, the Students are expected to be serious contenders after adding former Manchester City striker Benjani Mwaruwari to their arsenal along with experienced defenders Musa Bilankulu and Matthew Booth who spent the better part of his career in Russia.
