Varsity Cup Round 8 Preview

It’s the semi-finals of the varsity cup! The dominant Tuks and Shimlas have topped the tables for much of the tournament, but it was only in the last two games that Pukke and Ikeys really cemented their places in the top four.

Ikeys showed UJ that they were the stronger of the mid-table sides when they held on to a 8-0 lead in Cape Town on Monday. Their early lead was constantly challenged, but Ikeys showed terrific defending and UJ were unable to penetrate. This amazing ability to defend on their own try-line by plugging the gaps will help them when they play Shimlas next week.

Shimlas were too strong for Pukke this earlier this week. Their ability to relentlessly attack their opposition for entire games is what has made the Bloemfontein side the strongest title contenders. Pukke fought hard, though, and it is their innate ability to challenge stronger teams that resulted in their qualification for the semis. A bonus point against Shimlas resulted in them just squeezing past Maties.

Tuks have shown their mettle at this year’s tournament.  Their loss to Pukke in the middle of the group stage could be a worry though. Pukke know how to play against the Pretorians, but will they be able to do so in Pretoria? Many do not think that this is possible. Our BetXchange verdict for the Tuks-Pukke game is firmly on a Tuks victory.

Varsity Cup 2015

Ikeys will be travelling to Bloem to play the Shimlas, and not only will this help the unbeaten side in their intended path to the final, but it may be what helps break the Ikeys defence. Our verdict is that there will be little chance for an upset, and the Shimlas-Ikeys match will end with Shimlas the victors.

Varsity Cup Round 6 Preview

Round 6 of Varsity Cup rugby is coming, and bets are open with BetXchange! The first match of the evening should be a cracker as the mighty Shimlas face the visiting Ikeys. Shimlas remain unbeaten in the Varsity cup and they have their consistent form to thank for their table topping performance. Their ability to play disciplined rugby works hand-in-hand with their punishing pushes forward, and UCT’s Ikeys may not have the fortitude to be able to keep Shimlas out. Although Ikeys did well to beat Pukke in their last game, they will be hoping that Shimlas will be somewhat lacklustre like they were against a determined NMMU, and only then will Ikeys be able to win in Bloemfontein tonight.
Odds favour Shimlas at 5/10 to Ikeys’ 16/10

Maties have a big game tonight because if they stand any chance of reaching the semi-finals in two weeks’ time, they must resoundingly beat NMMU tonight as well as CUT in their next outing. Maties showed composure in order to score the two second-half tries against UJ last week to take the game by a point, and they should make it another win tonight. The Madibaz, although one of the tournament’s weakest teams, will be no walk-overs though. Their fight against Shimlas proved their intent, and they could severely disrupt Maties’ goals for this season.
Odds favour Maties at 1/20 to Madibaz’s 10/1

Pukke should pip the tournament’s weak CUT tonight but they have been known to show defensive weakness against a relentless opposition. CUT will be praying that they are possible candidates for the title of ‘relentless opposition’ but that may be asking too much from a side that has lacked any semblance of team-work.
Odds favour Pukke at 1/25 to CUT’s 25/1

UJ welcome Tuks this evening to the UJ Stadium and they will be hoping for a win against the powerful Pretorians if they want advance to the semi-finals. Their next two fixtures are especially tough but facing Tuks at home may offer the promising UJ boys a victory that will give them momentum for the trip to Cape Town next week. Tuks, however, have shown why they are at the top of the table. If they are on the front foot they will offer a weaker team no quarter and will most certainly score many points.
Odds favour Tuks at 5/10 to UJ’s 16/10

Ikeys absolutely smashed CUT 90-8 on Monday’s opening fixture. The UCT team dominated from the get-go and were rewarded early in the third minute with a try. From then on it was a whitewash of a game as the weak CUT could do nothing to halt the advancing Ikeys. By the end of the match Ikeys has managed to string twelve tries to CUT’s answer of one. Fly-half Warren Seals deservedly won man of the match after his two brilliant individual tries and multiple conversions.

The second match on Monday was hosted by the table-topping Shimlas against the relatively weak Maties squad, and as anticipated Maties put up a fight, but could not find a way to defeat what looks like the strongest team in the tournament. The game ended 21-16 to Shimlas. Tuks travelled to Potchefstroom to play Pukke, and they hoped to stay at the top of the Varsity Cup table, but their hopes were soon dashed when Pukke narrowly beat them with the difference being a penalty which was converted at the beginning of the game. Otherwise both teams scored five tries in a thrilling encounter; 42-37.

The last game on the Monday was held in Port Elizabeth between NMMU and the travelling UJ. The UJ forward pack made the difference on the day as they pushed the ball up regularly into the Madibaz half, and apart from the odd Madibaz break by their wingers, UJ scored regularly and converted well, the game ending 42-13.

Varsity Cup Round 5 Preview

Round 5 of the Varsity Cup takes place tonight and all Varsity Cup fans are looking forward to the spectacle. UJ will start the evening off when they continue their tour on the road by facing Maties in Stellenbosch. Maties will be looking for a home-win and their first win of the tournament, but UJ may prove to be the stronger of the two teams. However odds favour Maties at 9/20 with BetXchange.

NMMU will have the toughest challenge tonight when they welcome Shimlas to PE. Shimlas has looked powerful in all aspects of their game, and while the Madibaz have offered spirited play to their rugby, Shimlas will almost certainly win the game. Current Shimlas odds are 1/25. Similar odds favour the TUKS boys when they welcome the tournament’s underdogs CUT to Pretoria. CUT have looked weak and lack the uniformity of normal Varsity Cup teams.

The last game on Monday evening is between Pukke and Ikeys. The UCT squad will be travelling to Pukke’s fortress, the Fanie Du Toit Stadium, to do battle. Pukke’s home-ground has been its rallying-point as they have won all their games in Potch, and their odds clearly indicate this (4/10) while UCT may have an uphill struggle on their hands (2/1).

Tuks definitely look the strongest team in the tournament after they beat current champions Ikeys 39-24 with home ground advantage in Pretoria. Ikeys, having drawn their previous match with Maties, were not strong enough to stop the dominant Tuks who also saw themselves drawing last week against Shimlas. Shimlas were victorious this week though, as they stopped UJ from registering a single point in their match in Johannesburg. The game ended 0-24 to Shimlas. NMMU were given their first victory in the tournament when they beat CUT 34-13. The Mandelas proved too strong for the tournament’s weak sided Central University of Technology who also lost to UJ last week. The last game on Monday night between Maties and Pukke resulted in a 26-26 draw, the boys from Stellenbosch unlucky not to pull off a win after coming up from behind.

Varsity Cup Week 3 Preview
Week 3 of the Varsity Cup promises to be entertaining as all teams seem to be pretty evenly matched. The tournament is, however, still in its initial stages so although we might not yet see the tournament’s best rising to the top of the tables, no team will be willing to concede valuable points.

The first game on Monday sees CUT take on Shimlas. Although they displaying good form, Shimlas have been known to show weakness at times, but it should be plain-sailing for the Bloemfontein side as they play local rivals CUT away. CUT, though, will be tough to crack as they try to register their first point on the table. Odds are in favour of a Shimlas win.

The second game is being played at UCT where the Ikeys welcome NMMU. Ikeys will be hoping to play better than they did earlier this week. Their loss against Tuks showed a late game fight-back which they must attempt to emulate when playing NMMU. The Madibaz form has improved of late, but the odds are still slightly in Ikeys’ favour to win the game.

UJ hosts Pukke on Monday, and they must make amends for the shocking display they showed against Shimlas earlier this week. Not only were they weak in defence, but they also seemed without options when going forward. Pukke should take away a win from UJ even though they were resigned to a draw against Maties last Monday.

The last game on Varsity Cup Monday is between Tuks and Maties on Tuks’ home ground. They seem to require little advantage though, as they are the team to beat so far in the tournament. Maties have not managed a strong start yet, and they were lucky to fight their way back to a draw in the last game with Pukke. The odds in favour of a Tuks win.

JOHANNESBURG 15:00 15.01-2015

The Varsity Cup in 2014 took place between the 27th of January and the
7th of April 2014 and was the seventh edition of this tournament.
The universities that competed in the Cup in 2014 were:

Maties - Stellenbosch University
NMMU Madibaz - Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University
NWU Pukke - North-West University
UCT Ikey Tigers - University of Cape Town
UFS Shimlas - University of the Free State
UP Tuks - University of Pretoria
UJ - University of Johannesburg
Wits - University of the Witwatersrand

The Varsity Cup betting at BetXchange gets bigger and better every year.
In 2014 our final payout on the bets on Varsity Cup were over R5 million!!!

In the Semi- Finals UCT Ikey Tigers beat Maties 20-8 and NWU Pukke narrowly
beat NMMU Madibaz at 19-18. The final then pitted UCT Ikey Tigers verses
NWU Pukke and UCT came out victorious at 39-33. This was the second
Varsity Cup win for UCT Ikey Tigers, their first win having been in 2011.
Looking at the 7 years of Varsity Cup Maties have won the title 3 years
in a row,

2008-2010, but have since not tasted victory. UP Tuks, like UCT, have taken
the title twice and after missing the play-offs as defending champions last
year they are determined to make a comeback.

In other news UJ barely managed to cling onto their Varsity Cup status having
placed 7th in the overall standings. If it had not been for their win over
UKZN-Impi they would be out of the Varsity Cup. Wits however were not so
lucky, after failing to retain their status in the Varsity Cup last year they will be
taking part in the Varsity Shield 2015. This left a place open for 3 times
Varsity Shield Champions CUT Ixias to take part in the Cup 2015.

Round 1 of 2015 will be on the 9th of February and will have 2 televised games: the defending champions Ikeys verses Maties and Runners up NWU Pukke
verses NMMU. At BetXchange we pride ourselves on having the betting for Varsity Cup out first. Pick your favourites and place your bets at: https://www.betxchange.co.za/

The Universities taking part in 2015 are:

Ikeys
Maties
NMMU
Shimlas
Tuks
CUT
NWU-Puk
UJ
