The Open Championship

The Open Championship, often referred to as the Open or the British Open (primarily in the United States , is the oldest and most historically unique of the four major championships in professional golf. Some would actually go as far as marking the event as the World Championship of Golf. The Open holds its place as the third major of the calendar year, following The Masters and the U.S. Open, and preceding the PGA Championship.

Distinctively Unique in relation to the other four major championships ; 72-hole stroke play tournament is the only major held outside the United States and features a four-hole playoff at the end of regulation, and continues into sudden-death if tied after four holes, The Open also includes cut after 36 holes, limited to the top 70 players and ties. The major is an official event on the European Tour, Japanese’s Golf Tour, as well as the PGA Tour and therefore the prize money won has weight on the official money lists (Race to Dubai & FedEx Cup).

There are presently 32 exemption categories. The ones holding more significance include:

  • The top 30 in the previous season's European Tour Race to Dubai and the PGA Tour FedEx Cup.
  • All previous Open Championship victors who will be aged 60 or under on the final day of the tournament.
  • Past Open champions who have finished in the top 10 in the previous five years.
  • All players who have won one of the other three majors in the previous five years.
  • The top 10 from the previous year's Open Championship.
  • The top 50 on the Official World Golf Ranking. This category means that no member of the
  • Additional exemptions are given to winners and other top finishers in various important tournaments around the world, to leading money list winners in the major tours and to recent Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup players. The latest winners of a few major amateur events are also given exemptions. They must remain amateurs to take advantage of this exemption.

The Open Championship

The event takes place annually on one of nine links courses in Scotland or England. It was held once in Northern Ireland, at Royal Portrush in 1951 but has not returned. This year’s tournament will be held at the 7,192 yards (6,576 m) 71 Par Muirfield Course of Gullane, East Lothian, Scotland. As one of the great Open Championship venues Muirfield is considered as one of the world’s premier courses. Distinguished for its objectivity with regards to its demanding layout of two nines running clockwise and counter-clockwise.

Last Year’s Open Championship offered an exceptionally substantial total prize fund of about £5 million (about $7.8 million) with the winners share amounting to £900,000 (approximately $1.4 million). This year’s event will see a 5% increase in prize money, with an overall fund of £5.25 million and first prize of £945,000. As with the other major championship tournaments Prize monies are only awarded professionals who manage to make the cut. The reigning champion is South African Ernie Els who won in 2012 at the Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Club of Lytham St. Annes in Lancashire.
